Background of the Study
Standardization of language through textbooks is a critical component of language preservation and education. In Calabar, efforts to standardize the Efik language have led to the production of textbooks designed to provide consistent linguistic and grammatical frameworks for learners. However, the process faces significant challenges such as dialectal variations, limited consensus on orthographic norms, and resistance from educators accustomed to traditional methods (Inyang, 2023). Efik language textbooks play an essential role in shaping learners’ language proficiency and cultural identity, yet discrepancies in standardization efforts may undermine these objectives. The textbooks must balance modern linguistic developments with traditional language use to remain relevant. This study assesses the standardization challenges in Efik language textbooks by examining content quality, consistency, and user feedback from educators and students. The investigation aims to identify areas of improvement and propose strategies to overcome the obstacles faced in developing standardized educational materials (Ekpo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite concerted efforts to produce standardized Efik language textbooks, inconsistencies in content, orthography, and pedagogical approaches continue to hinder effective language instruction in Calabar. Variations in dialect and resistance to standardization have led to fragmented teaching practices and limited learner comprehension. These challenges compromise the role of textbooks as authoritative resources for language learning. This study seeks to identify the primary challenges in Efik textbook standardization and evaluate their impact on educational outcomes, thereby providing a foundation for more coherent and effective language planning strategies (Inyang, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the consistency of Efik language textbooks in Calabar.
To identify challenges in the standardization process.
To recommend strategies for improving textbook standardization.
Research Questions
What inconsistencies exist in current Efik language textbooks?
How do these inconsistencies affect language learning?
What measures can enhance standardization in Efik educational materials?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the challenges of standardizing Efik language textbooks, providing insights for educators, policymakers, and publishers. The findings will contribute to improving language education and preserving Efik linguistic heritage by fostering more effective and consistent teaching materials (Inyang, 2023; Ekpo, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to standardization challenges in Efik language textbooks in Calabar and does not extend to other instructional materials or regions.
